TWILIGHT THEATER COMPANY ANNOUNCES NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DATE: June 20th, 2016

TONER TAPPED AS COMPANY’S NEXT ARTISTIC LEADER
Portland, OR – Twilight Theater Company continues to experience rapid growth as a newcomer to the Portland theater scene and TTC is excited to announce that part of that growth includes naming a new Artistic Director - Dorinda Toner. Toner succeeds JJ Harris, who co-founded the company with Danyelle Tinker and Sue Westbo in 2013. The company moved into its new home at 7515 Brandon Avenue in North Portland in February of 2015 and is quickly gaining reputation for producing high quality, compelling plays and entertainment with edge. An accomplished director, actress and vocalist Toner most recently directed The Heidi Chronicles to critical acclaim.

Toner, who relocated to the Pacific Northwest 14 years ago, has been performing on stages across North America for over 33 years. She studied Theater Performance and Directing at Concordia & Thompson Universities in her native country of Canada where she is also a Canadian Recording Artist. Toner has served as a board member on several non-profit organizations including The Vancouver Area Theater Alliance, The Magenta Theater, Pacific Stageworks Theater and Twilight Theater Company.
Toner has directed dozens of plays and has won several awards for her work. Spamalot! at HART, for which she was Director and Musical Director, recently won the Applause NW Ovation Award for Favorite Regional Theater Show of the Year (2015). Other shows previously directed near and dear to her heart are: The Heidi Chronicles, Becky's New Car, Family Hardware, Wit (Winner - Slocum House Theater Best Show 2009), The Curious Savage, Pride & Prejudice, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Laramie Project, and Every Christmas Story Ever Told, And Then Some.

Toner is also an award winning actress. You may have seen Dorinda most recently as Cynthia in Looking for Olivia at Twilight Theater (Nomination - 2015 Applause NW Ovation Award), Kate Keller in All My Sons at New Century Players (Nomination - 2015 Applause NW Ovation Award), a singing/dancing Shopper in She Loves Me at Lakewood Theater, Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes at HART (Nomination - 2014 Applause NW Ovation Award), Elaine in The Exes for Fertile Ground Festival, Suzy in Wait Until Dark at Magenta Theater & Lovestreet Playhouse (Winner - ADA Ms. Spotlight Award - Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor), Matthew/ John Paul Satre in Godspell at Pacific Stageworks or as Joanne in RENT at Clark College. Other favorite roles include Diana in Lend Me A Tenor, Becca in Rabbit Hole, Sally in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Mrs. Meers in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Aunt Abby in Arsenic and Old Lace (Winner -Standing Ovation Award for Outstanding Performance 2008) and Janis Joplin in The Best of Rock and Roll. Toner has also has frequented the cabaret scene in Portland appearing at Tony Starlight's as a guest of the Cabaret Chantuese and at Mazzas as a guest of The PDX Stew's Respecterella.

"Dorinda has had a positive impact on the Community Theater scene in the Portland area and she continues to cultivate lasting relationships with local artists. We are excited to welcome her inclusive and engaging energy here at Twilight.” - Danyelle Tinker, TTC Founding Member. Here is just a small sampling of what people who have worked with Toner had to say:

“As a Director, Dorinda has had a positive influence on me as an actor, in that she both challenged my boundaries and yet allowed me to find my own path. In my capacity as Artistic Director or HART, I cannot say enough about her as a collaborator and peer. She pursues the highest of standards and sets a firm but friendly tone in her process. There is always a discourse with her.” - Paul Roder

Dorinda is both an amazingly talented actress and an insightful, open director who has the unique ability to provide a clear vision for a production while honoring the artistic contributions of her performers. As an actor, I would perform with her on stage or under her direction any time. - Jay Hill

I found Dorinda to be thoroughly delightful to work with, infinitely patient with neophytes, creative with her direction, confident in her vision yet collaborative and flexible with others' ideas, traits all bound within a warm friendly personality. - Virginia Kincaid

In my years working with Dorinda in a Vancouver non-profit, I found her to be a big picture person. So not only are you getting a creative leader, you have gotten a person who sees the theater as a whole, and she can lead knowing every piece makes a stronger program. -Suzanne Turnauer

“I'm beyond thrilled to accept the position of Artistic Director at Twilight Theater Company.” Toner remarked, “It can be rare for a community theater to be willing to take risks with play selection, pushing the envelope of typical community theater fodder, providing great entertainment and raising important questions. With Twilight's commitment to bringing 'Entertainment With Edge' and with its dedicated and enthusiastic Board of Directors, artists and volunteers, I feel confident we will continue to ensure a creative environment where artists and audiences alike feel challenged, entertained and moved. Art that reflects our biggest delights and deepest struggles has the power to invoke conversation and conversation is the first, best step to building strong community.”

Jo Strom Lane, President of TTC Board of Directors, adds - “A formal announcement of our New Artistic Director will be made at Twilight's Season Announcement Party to take place on Friday Sept. 30, 2016. Everyone can be sure that Twilight Theater will endeavor to meet a growing need for accessible, innovative theater in North Portland. The public is invited to attend this celebration and encouraged to be involved in the company. We are thrilled to welcome Dorinda and are excited for our upcoming season under Toner's leadership and wealth of experience.”
